007: First Light Is a James Bond Origin Story From Hitman’s Studio

007: First Light is IO Interactive's new James Bond game, and a first look will follow later this week.

Known for years by its working title Project 007, IO Interactive is finally unveiling its upcoming game later this week in its IOI Showcase on June 6. Not much is known currently about what to expect, though the studio's teaser website describes it as "a wholly original Bond origin story, players will step into the shoes of the world's favourite Secret Agent to earn their 00 status."

Notably, 007: First Light is joined by two of IO Interactive's other titles during this showcase. Hitman World of Assassination news is promised following a recent PlayStation VR2 adaptation for the stealth sandbox's rebooted trilogy. This also promises a further look at MindsEye, a game we're frankly unsure about what to make of. That isn't helped by the Chief Legal Officer and Chief Financial Officer both departing the studio (credit to Eurogamer) a week before launch.

It's been a long while since I've felt truly invested in a James Bond story across any medium. No Time to Die may have been critically acclaimed, though it didn't personally land with me for various reasons, and I've put down most of the continuity novels that I've previously attempted reading. Young Bond was an exception when those novels launched, and I could happily rewatch Skyfall.

I'll be keen to see what IO Interactive can do with an original James Bond adventure, as it's been nearly 13 years since Activision's ill-fated 007 Legends. I'm still fond of EA's era of James Bond adventures, Everything or Nothing being a particular favourite. Either way, I've got faith following the studio's work on Hitman World of Assassination.

007: First Light is currently only confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, though we'll likely hear about more platforms soon.
