PaperKlay Channels Banjo and Fez With a New 3D Platformer on Steam

PaperKlay aims to channel old-school 3D platformers with a handcrafted paper world, and it's coming soon to Steam.

Created by WhyKev, PaperKlay is a new 3D collect-a-thon starring the almost predictably named Chick and Nugget. It's set across an open world that visually emulates being crafted out of, you guessed it, paper, clay, and cardboard. Reminiscent of Fez, advancing through this world requires rotating it to unlock news perspectives previously hidden away.

You can expect the common hallmarks normally featured in a retro-inspired 3D platformers. Chick has the usual moves like double jumping, dashing and gliding, while Nugget is the star in a series of puzzle game mini levels. Platforming veteran Grant Kirkhope of Banjo-Kazooie and Yooka-Laylee fame is back as the composer, and he's joined by Steven Melin from Moonlighter and Dark Dice.

PaperKlay is also a solo effort from developer Kevin Andersson, who's been documenting his efforts across the last three years over on YouTube. A press release confirms you'll likely need five or six hours to complete, February's free PC demo remains live and while the initial release on May 27 is Steam exclusive, a Nintendo Switch version will follow at a later date.
